Vigil held on what would have been Borderline victim’s 21st birthday

People sang happy birthday on what should have been Borderline shooting victim Mark “Marky” Meza Jr.’s 21st birthday.

Friends, family members and total strangers sang it somberly in Carpinteria where Meza grew up.

Meza was working as a busboy the night of the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks.

He was one of 12 victims. A coworker who also survived the Las Vegas shooting last year attended the vigil by the Seal Fountain off Linden Ave. He was one of several people who spoke.

Participants held candles and signed ribbons and shared stories.

They also passed out flowers to place in the surf. They carried them by candlelight to the beach where someone wrote Meza’s name in the sand.

Friends said Meza loved photographer. His family has set up a scholarship fund for photography students.
