Meet Preston, Vandenberg AFB new highly trained service dog

There is a new big dog in town, and he is highly skilled and first of his kind at the base. Meet Preston!

Preston is the first certified courthouse facility dog for the U.S. Department of Defense and the United States Airforce.

Preston has about 25 custom skills and one of 166 courthouse facility dogs in the United States. Preston is also one of three service dogs to work at the federal level and the only dog to work in the Air Force. The other two dogs work for the FBI.

Preston came from the POOCH program through the Tender Loving Canines organization at Mule Creek State Prison in northern California.

The Prisoners Overcoming Obstacles & Creating Hope (POOCH) Program trains service dogs by pairing them with people within the prison system. The program says inmates that train dogs are less likely to re-offend and service dogs trained in the program have a higher success rate for placement.

Preston started his training at about 8-weeks old and completed his program just a couple of weeks ago.

His responsibilities on the base include day-to-day interactions with those on base including Air Force OSI interviews, and being in court.

Preston also works with the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response team on the base.
