Crews battle brush fire in Gaviota area

Crews are battling a fire that broke out in the area of Baron Canyon in Gaviota just west of the Tajiguas Landfill Thursday afternoon.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 4 p.m., burned approximately 2 to 3 acres before firefighters stopped its forward progress, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

Although the fire is burning in heavy brush, Zaniboni said the blaze is not expected to grow and crews are working to get full containment. One helicopter making continuing drops, along with a drop from a water tanker aircraft, assisted firefighters in getting the upper hand.

No structures are threatened and there were no evacuations, Zaniboni said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
