Nipomo woman receives surprise party on 100th birthday

There were smiles all around at the Nipomo McDonalds Tuesday morning.

Surrounded by family and friends who had gathered for a surprise party, Rachel Rangel of Nipomo celebrated her 100th birthday.

“It’s a very special day for me,” said Rangel. “I was surprised.”

To help her celebrate the big milestone, Rangel wore a special 100th birthday tiara and sash, which read, “100 and fabulous.”

“I’m very happy,” Rangel said. “I’m excited!”

Born on Oct. 23, 1918 in Durango, Mexico, Rangel has lived in Nipomo since 1958.

She worked in agriculture for many years, living in the same Nipomo home she still resides in today.

As part of the celebration, she was presented with a Certificate of Recognition by San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Lynn Compton.

She also received a cake and several birthday presents during the party that was held in the busy restaurant she regularly visits.

Rangel credits her health and her longevity to her deep religious faith.

“Jesus knows that my heart is full of love for everyone, everybody, the whole world, good or bad,” Rangel said. “Thank you Jesus.”
