‘Suspicious substance’ at Grover Beach Elementary prompts students to shelter-in-place

Grover Beach police have cleared the area at Grover Beach Elementary School where a bottle with an unknown liquid was discovered Monday morning.

The school had been on lockdown with the students sheltering in their classrooms as a safety precaution.

The Five Cities Fire Authority, Hazmat, San Luis Count bomb squad, and San Luis County Public Health all responded to assist Grover Beach with this investigation.

The bottle was safely removed for further testing and the school returned to its normal activity at about 3:30 p.m.

INITIAL INFORMATION

Authorities are investigating a “suspicious substance” found inside a container at Grover Beach Elementary School in Grover Beach.

Officials say the container was discovered behind dumpsters on the school’s campus by school staff. Buildings near where the container was found were evacuated, while others sheltered students safely in place.

School officials say lunch was brought in to all students who were told to shelter in place. Parents have access to the school office.

The incident began at about 9:45 a.m. Monday. A hazmat team was called to assist with the investigation as well as the Bomb Squad who made use of a robot to try and identify the suspicious substance.

The Five Cities Fire Authority tweeted that there is no threat to students.
