Santa Barbara Library inspires Frankenstein themed cocktails

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to treat yourself than with a Frankenstein themed cocktail from a local Santa Barbara bar.

The Santa Barbara Library and four local bars have teamed up to create these ‘ghouly’ drinks for Santa Barbara Reads Month in honor of the bicentennial of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel.

“Santa Barbara Reads is a concept where: one book, one community, thousands of conversations,” said Jace Turner, Santa Barbara Community Relations Librarian.

In the seventeen years of doing the program, this is the first time the Library has asked bars to create these ‘undead’ concoctions.

“I think it is pretty progressive of a Library to approach a local bar and say ‘Hey create a drink based on our Santa Barbara Reads book,” said Turner.

Each bar was given the task to create their own Frankenstein themed cocktail.

Alcazar Tapas Bar at 1812 Cliff Drive created the “Modern Prometheus.” Avid Frankenstein readers will note that the Modern Prometheus is synonymous to the title of Mary Shelley’s novel.

“Great books deserve great drinks,” said Devyn Licon, bartender at Alcazar Tapas Bar.

The “Modern Prometheus” is a fun twist on a well-known drink called the ‘corpse reviver.’ The “Modern Prometheus” is a mix of gin, Lillet Blanc, Bauchant, lemon, and absinthe.

The Good Lion at 1212 State Street created the “Green Beast” which is a nod to Boris Karloff’s portrayal of the titular character. The “Green Beast” is a mix of St. George absinthe, lime, and cucumber cordial.

The Milk & Honey bar at 30 West Anapamu Street created the “Elizabeth Departed.” The inspiration for the cocktail comes from Frankenstein’s dead wife, Elizabeth. “Elizabeth Departed” is a mix of Rittenhouse Rye, Sweet Vermouth, Cynar, grapefruit juice, mint, and salt.

“Yea, when the idea of the Library asking for cocktails came to us it was like, ‘Alright, didn’t see that coming,’ but has actually worked out really easily, you can always find inspiration through words,” said Mike Doyle, Bartender at Milk & Honey

In addition to these fun, festive drinks, the Library is also offering free copies of other Frankenstein-themed books for all ages.

“These books run the gamut of forms and genres including board games, graphic novels, and non-fiction texts,” said Turner.

The Santa Barbara Library and the Santa Barbara Library Foundation have also teamed up to put on 67 Frankenstein themed events throughout the month of October. Some events include ‘Monsters on Broadway,’ a science fair, and a seminar on social disorders.
