Driver in deadly crash on Highway 118 near Oxnard arrested for DUI

Emergency responders were dispatched to a deadly crash in the area of Vineyard Avenue and Highway 118 in the unincorporated community of El Rio, north of Oxnard Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities temporarily shut down all westbound traffic on Highway 118 in the area while they investigated the crash.

The crash was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. CHP says a green Nissan Altima driven by 28-year-old Santa Paula resident Castro Margarito was traveling westbound on Highway 118 when it slammed into the back a semitruck that was turning into a concrete plant.

There were two men inside the Altima at the time of the crash, says CHP. The passenger, a 42-year-old man out of Santa Paula, was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters while Margarito was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver of the semitruck was not injured.

The Margarito was subsequently arrested for felony driving while under the influence of alcohol, CHP says, and was booked into Ventura County Jail.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call the Ventura Area CHP office at 805-662-2640.
