Reservoir Fire burns 50+ acres, 100% contained

(9/16/18 at 11:52 p.m.) Cal Fire in San Luis Obispo has put out the Reservoir Fire Sunday night.

Firefighters contained the fire around 10 p.m. It burned 51 acres.

(9/16/18 at 5:30 p.m.) Cal Fire reports that the Reservoir Fire has burned approximately 51 acres at 90% containment.

A PG&E spokesperson says the Cal Poly power outage may have been caused by the fire after all. Hernandez says the outage and fire happened at the same time and that power was restored to the community first before the university due to the university’s size.

Power has been restored to both the community and Cal Poly.

The cause of the fire and the official cause of the power outages are under investigation.

(9/16/18 at 1:30 p.m.) A spokesperson from PG&E says all power outages in the area have been restored.

Karly Hernandez with PG&E says that about 285 customers in the area lost power around 8:25 a.m. and around 10:11 p.m. power was restored to all areas except Cal Poly.

Power to the Cal Poly campus was restored in phases. The entire campus got their power back around 12:30 p.m.

Hernandez confirms that Cal Poly’s outages were not caused by the Reservoir Fire.

“Someone from Cal Poly told me that it was an equipment issue on their end,” said Hernandez.

Chris Elms with Cal Fire SLO says that power lines are down in the burn zone and the fire is burning heavy brush. The Reservoir Fire has burned about 50 acres at 60% containment.

(9/16/18 at 12:00 p.m.) Fire crews are battling a vegetation fire near Cuesta Park in San Luis Obispo.

Cal Fire responded to the scene of two fires about 15 acres in size in the area of 2700 reservoir canyon near Cuesta Park around 8:35 a.m.

People in the area took to social media to say they could see smoke by their houses but Cal Fire confirms that no structures were immediately threatened. Cal Fire has not called for any evacuations at this time.

The Reservoir fire has burned about 50 acres, and forward progress has been stopped and is at 60% containment. Chris Elms, a Cal Fire Public Information Officer, says the Reservoir Fire is made up of two fires burning about 150 yards from each other. One fire has burned about 13 acres and the other about 40 acres.

Elms says Cal Fire hopes to have these fires mopped up by the end of the day but says one of the fires is burning in some heavy brush.

The Cal Poly Police says the power is out on campus due to the Reservoir Fire and does not have an estimated time on when power will be restored. PG& E’s website indicates that power should be restored 1:15 p.m.
