Couple cancels tenth anniversary Maui vacation due to Hurricane Lane

Kara and Scott Buchanan have spent two years saving for a trip to Maui with their children to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

They planned to leave this week, but they decided to cancel the trip because of the threat of hurricane Lane.

“With the hurricane, the one that has turned north toward the islands we are a little uncomfortable getting on a plane and flying out there,” said Scott Buchanan, a financial planner.

The couple reached out to a KEYT Facebook post asking travelers if they were canceling trips.

They had plans to snorkel, surf and enjoy a Luau.

The couple canceled a cruise last year after Kara’s mother’s home burned in a Northern California Fire. So this is another blow.

“Now we have no plans for our anniversary, which is in two days, because we were planning on sitting on a beach, but no matter what we do at least we will be together,” said Kara.

Her husband responded with a grin by saying, ” unless there is a little surprise in store for you, we’ll see.”

The couple said they were grateful to Hawaiian Airlines for reimbursing their trip even though they didn’t have trip insurance. They also said Costco’s travel deals and The Grand Wailea allowed them to cancel their plans and reservations without paying a penalty. They hope to make it to Maui when the weather cooperates.
