Police investigating gang-related shooting in Lompoc

Police are investigating a shooting in the area of the 700 block of North D Street in Lompoc that sent two men to the hospital late Monday afternoon.

Both victims are in stable condition, according to investigators who say one of those victims was an innocent bystander.

“Gang members, drugs, this is what happens in this neighborhood,” said a man who asked to be referred to as “Nick.”

The incident was reported shortly after 4:30. Lompoc police believe the shooting was gang-related.

Lompoc police say one victim was taken to a local hospital and another taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by a Calstar helicopter. Both suffering from gunshot wounds. The shooting reportedly happened in an alleyway between two apartment buildings with multiple shots fired, according to authorities.

“I saw a group, three or four individuals about 45 minutes to a half hour before the incident happened. They were congregating outside in the alleyway. It just looked suspicious,” said Nick.

Despite air and ground law enforcement units, a search for suspects came up empty. While authorities say there’s no definite suspect description yet, they say police are looking for a male or male suspects.

No further details were immediately known about the incident. Meanwhile, community members like Nick say they just want to take back their neighborhood.

“I would like to see more patrols in the neighborhood and perhaps more contacts with known gang associates,” said Nick.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is urged to call the Lompoc Police Department or contact police through their mobile app.
