Talent remains for Bishop Diego football despite heavy graduation loss

John Harris, Ashton Borgeson, Isaiah Veal, Dylan Streett and other star players are gone at Bishop Diego High School. Plus last year’s entire starting offensive line has graduated but don’t feel sorry for the Cardinals, there is still plenty of talent left on campus.

Bishop Diego made Santa Barbara County history in 2017 by becoming the first high school to win a State Bowl Championship and they expect the winning to continue in the 2018 season.

Quarterback Jake Engel returns as does running back Adrian Soracco and fullback Chris Mesipam.

The offensive line maybe young but head coach Tom Crawford is optimistic about the group saying they have size and talent.

Sophomore Luke Knightley could be the next big star at Bishop Diego. He will play wide receiver and safety this year. Senior Ryan Flood will also start at receiver and in the defensive backfield.

Bishop Diego also has by far the best punter and kicker in the area with Jack Luckhurst.

The Cardinals have been bumped up from division 6 to division 4 by the CIF and they will also now play in the Camino League. Grace Brethren remains a league opponent and the Lancers were the only team that beat Bishop Diego in 2017. Camarillo, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks are also in the league.

Bishop Diego kicks off the season this Friday at 7:30pm against Cabrillo at Santa Barbara City College.
