5 lost hikers rescued from Los Padres National Forest

Santa Barbara Sheriff helicopters with night vision capabilities were used in rescuing five lost hikers from the Los Padres National Forest near Cuyama Sunday morning.

Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a report of a medical emergency around 11 p.m. Saturday. When crews arrived, they learned that five hikers were reported missing from the Miranda Pine Campground which is located in the forest near Cuyama.

A Sheriff’s helicopter was called out with night vision capabilities to search for the missing hikers. A helicopter crew located two of the hikers.

Fire Officials say it was difficult in rescuing the hikers because of the rugged terrain and no moonlight. A crew member was hoisted down 50 feet to rescue the hikers. D ue to the dust cloud created by the helicopter, the aircraft had to fly 90 feet in the air to Santa Barbara Airport.

Medical crews say one of the rescued hikers was suffering from severe dehydration and disorientation. Both hikers were transported to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

The Search and Rescue crew traveled back to the Miranda Pine Campground area to continue their search for the remaining three hikers.

Around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Search and Rescue crews located the last three hikers.
