Caravan of women head to border in support of separated families
A caravan of women heading to the U.S.-Mexico border stopped by the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mercado on Saturday.
They are riding together as part of a national movement to show support for families separated by the Trump administration.
The women who are grandmothers came from all over California, including Los Osos and San Luis Obispo.
They have never met before, until now and are bonded by their belief that families should stay together.
“This is an inhumane situation going on in the detention centers,” said Gail Comer of Los Osos.
The women are part of the group called Grannies Respond or Abuelas Responden.
“It’s gotten to the point where it’s down to the grandmothers,” said Linda Wenzl of San Luis Obispo.
They are bringing signs, letters of encouragement for the parents and children and a list of demands.
“That all children must be returned to their families immediately, and families should be kept together and no child isolated from their loved ones,” said Comer.
Before the long drive, the women were hosted and given food by The Santa Barbara Response Network, which is helping families being deported and held in detention centers.
The women’s first stop is at the San Diego border for a vigil at the International Friendship Park.
