Highway 1 at Mud Creek to re-open July 18 after massive landslide south of Big Sur

Highway 1 at Mud Creek south of Big Sur will be re-opening sooner than anticipated.

Caltrans tweeted that Highway 1 at Mud Creek will re-open on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, by 10 a.m. after more than a year of being closed to traffic.

For almost 14 months, Highway 1 at Mud Creek has been closed as crews worked to remove more than one million tons of rock and dirt that buried that portion of the highway by what’s being called California’s biggest landslide in history.

Highway 1 is the main artery running through Big Sur, a picturesque and rugged stretch that traverses San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties.

In their tweet, Caltrans said final roadway striping and inspection is underway.

The massive landslide occurred on May 20, 2017.
