Oxnard man arrested for DUI after head-on crash on Pacific Coast Highway

Authorities are investigating a crash that injured at least four people and saw a car plunge into the Pacific Ocean on Pacific Coast Highway just south of Mugu Rock in Ventura County.

The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, and the California Highway Patrol says a 24-year-old Oxnard man was arrested for felony driving while under the influence of alcohol in connection to the collision.

The 24-year-old driver was traveling northbound on Highway 1 with three passengers when he lost control of his car while negotiating a left curve and collided with a K-rail that prompted him to cross into the southbound lane and directly into the path of a Mini Cooper being driven by a 40-year-old Malibu woman, CHP says.

After crashing head-on into the Mini Cooper, the Toyota Corolla being driven by the 24-year-old rolled down a steep embankment to the ocean, according to authorities. The Mini Cooper rolled onto its side on Highway 1. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

Two of the male passengers in the Toyota Corolla were taken to Los Robles Medical Center with major injuries. Both, the driver of the Toyota and Mini Cooper suffered minor injuries, according to CHP, and were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The 24-year-old driver, whose identity was not released, will be booked into Ventura County Jail. A section of Pacific Coast Highway was closed while the on-scene investigation was ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call the Ventura Area CHP Office at 805-662-2640.
