Ventura County Fair poster contest winner announced

Ventura County children in grades 5 through 12 competed in illustrating the 2018 Ventura County Fair theme, “A County Fair with Ocean Air”. Out of 59 entries, three winners were chosen.

Carys Garvey, 15, from Ventura won first prize for her illustration. Garvey will be entering the 10th grade in the fall. She is a founding member of the Ventura nonprofit, STEMbassadors, which is dedicated to teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills. Carys says she is honored to have her artwork used for the 2018 Ventura County Fair poster.

Madison J. Lonis, 18, from Ventura won second place. Lonis is a two-year AP art student at Buena High School. She says she hopes to share more of her art with others and become a high school art teacher.

Katherine Curtis, 13, from Simi Valley won third place. Curtis just completed the 8th grade at Hillside Middle School, where she was a member of their award-winning Mock Trial team. She says she enjoys a variety of art mediums but her favorites are pen and ink and using her drawing tablet.

“Congratulations to the talented winners of this year’s contest,” said Barbara Quaid, Fair CEO. “Every artist who entered can be very proud of your uniquely crafted contributions to our community. You have told us many personal Fair stories, each in your own talented way. We thank every child who participated and encourage all children to continue creating and making art to share with us at the annual Ventura County Fair.”

Cash prizes were awarded to all three winners. All contest entries will be displayed in the Youth Expo at the Ventura Fair, August 1-12, 2018.
