Replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta on permanent display at San Buenaventura Mission

A replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture has a new permanent home at the San Buenaventura Mission.

Most people have to stand in line for hours to see the original in St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican.

Thanks to a donation by Jacqueline and Brad Hanson the mission bought the replica depicting Mary holding the body of her crucified son. It is one of a hundred marble castings in the world.

Fr. Tom Elewaut held an unveiling service on Sunday afternoon. He wants people to feel welcome to come and see the masterpiece in a new gallery at the mission on the 200 block of E. Main St. in Ventura.
