Man shot in the chest on Fourth of July in Ventura

Ventura police are investigating a shooting after a man was shot in the chest Wednesday night, according to police.

It happened after 10 p.m. on the 6300 block of Whippoorwill Street. The man was at a party with some friends when he was shot in front of an apartment, police said.

His friends heard a loud bang and saw a dark-colored pickup truck quickly drive away from the scene.

The man was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center for surgery. His condition is not known at this time.

Nearby, a Ventura police officer responding to the shooting crashed into a light pole at 10:14 p.m. It happened on Kimball and Thille streets when a driver did not pull over when the officer had his siren and lights on. The police officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.

Authorities investigating the shooting have not released a description of the attackers they are looking for.
