Volunteers fan out to clean up State Street in honor of mudslide victim Jack Cantin

State Street in downtown Santa Barbara is a little brighter this weekend thanks to some local teens who cleaned up the area in honor of mudslide victim, Jack Cantin.

Cantin,17, was presumed dead in the January 9 disaster.

On Saturday, armed with trash bags and clean up tools, Santa Barbara High School student Kiara Lin and volunteers walked up and down State Street picking up trash.

They are part of the Jack Cantin Clean Up Crew–making the city a little neater in honor of their good friend.

“He would always go around renovating, cleaning and doing whatever he could,” Lin said.

Lin wants to help keep his legacy alive.

“He was one of the funniest, kindest, smartest people. I looked up to him because of all of the great things he was doing for the community.”

Cantin’s sister Lauren survived the mudslide. She was rescued after being trapped for hours.

Cantin recently appeared on The Ellen Show to sing and talk about that tragic day.

“Lauren always wanted to be on Ellen for singing,” Lin said. “She has such a talent and I was so happy to see her getting her story told.”

Lin and Cantin were part of a recent benefit concert called Teens Sing for Santa Barbara.

The teens raised $65,000 dollars for The Unity Shoppe to help Montecito mudslide and Thomas fire victims.

A repeat of the show will air Sunday, May 27 on NewsChannel 3 at 8 p.m.
