Tommy the horse finds new home in Ventura County after Thomas Fire

Tommy the horse that was found wandering the streets in Santa Paula during the Thomas Fire has been up for adoption for nearly one month.

Great news! On Friday Tommy has a new place to call home.

It’s been a long journey for Tommy the horse. Tommy is a 25-year old Percheron Arab mix. Good Samaritans found him wandering the streets of Santa Paula during the Thomas Fire and brought him to the Humane Society.

“He was very emaciated,” said Kendra Winwood, who is the Humane Officer. “He was covered in ash and soot, and just very sad looking. Because of his emaciation, he needs a thyroid powder daily and he will probably need that for the rest of his life.”

The shelter has nursed the white horse back to health. And once Tommy’s story got out, the shelter’s phone was ringing off the hook. A lot of people wanted to give Tommy a new home.

“We screened all the applications,” said Winwood. “We wanted to know where he was going, if he was going to be housed on their property or if he was going to go to a boarding facility.”

Then Anne Scioscia called the shelter.

“He is older and he will require some medication for the rest of his life,” said Anne Scioscia, who adopted Tommy. “So I think a few people dropped out of wanting to adopt him, but my desire only became stronger. I feel like he needs me more than ever.”

“Our best application that came in was Anne,” said Winwood. “She has a stunning ranch for him to go to and that was it. We were sold.”

Anne lives in Westlake Village and keeps horses in Moorpark. If her name sounds familiar, it should. Anne is the wife of Mike Scioscia, the former LA Dodgers catcher and now current manager of the Los Angeles Angels.

“He will be such a happy rockstar at Peck Farm in Moorpark,” said Sciascia. “He will be among champion horses and among loved ponies.”

Once Anne heard about Tommy’s story, she knew she had to have him and make sure he was ok.

“There has been a lot of interest in Tommy,” said Scioscia. “I am so happy to give you guys this happy ending for people like myself that follow the news and followed his story. We are going to keep the name Tommy. That is his name and it’s been what he knows about people that have been good to him so we are going to keep Tommy.”

On Friday Anne prepared the newest member of her ranch family for his new home.
