UCSB adds 5 new members to athletics hall of fame
UCSB’s Hall of Fame class of 2018 features two Olympians, a former NBA player and two volleyball coaches that combined to win almost 1,400 games.
The Gauchos inducted five new members at the Lobero Theater on Saturday in Santa Barbara: John Anderson, Kathy Gregory, Orlando Johnson, Barbara Nwaba and Ken Preston.
Orlando Johnson only played three years of men’s basketball at UCSB but still is the all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,825 points.
He was a two-time Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player as he led UCSB to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2010 and 2011.
He was a second round draft pick of the Sacramento Kings and played two seasons with the Indiana Pacers.
Barbara Nwaba set numerous UCSB Track & Field records and won the Big West Heptathlon in 2012 with a meet record 5,714 points.
She is a two-time U.S. Heptathlon champion and came in 12th place at the 2016 Olympics in the Heptathlon.
John Anderson was a First Team All-American in men’s water polo in 1984 and 1985. He led UCSB to the NCAA Tournament in 1985 where the Gauchos advanced to the national semifinals.
Anderson was a member of the 1984 Canadian Olympic Team.
Kathy Gregory is 8th all-time with 882 NCAA Division 1 wins in women’s volleyball.
She coached UCSB for 38 years and led them to 27 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Ken Preston coached UCSB men’s volleyball for 30 years winning a total of 516 games..
His Gauchos advanced to postseason play 19 times. His 1988 team lost to USC in 5 games in the National Championship.
