Grieving Montecito mother files lawsuit against Southern California Edison
Attorneys for the family of Sawyer and Morgan Corey, who were tragically killed in the Jan. 9 Montecito mudslide, held a press conference Thursday at 11 a.m. to announce the filing of a lawsuit against Southern California Edison on behalf of the victims of the Montecito mudslide.

The attorneys allege that the Thomas Fire and subsequent mudslides were the “inevitable byproducts of Southern California Edison’s willful and conscious disregard of public safety.”
Carie Baker-Corey walked her property along East Valley Road for the first time recently saying it was nearly unrecognizable. The 49-year-old mother of three lost two of her daughters on January 9. Sawyer, 12, and Morgan, 25, were found in the mud and debris in Montecito. Baker-Corey and her other 12-year-old daughter, Summer, were badly injured.
“I just can’t believe my girls are gone. I can’t believe my babies are not here with us,” she said surrounded by her legal team when announcing the lawsuit. “”If anything can be done to prevent this in the future that’s what I want. No one deserves to go though this, my children don’t deserve to go through this, the children sobbing at schools don’t deserve this. That’s my motivation here.”
SCE responded with the following:
“The Thomas fire has obviously had an impact on many individuals, but the origin and cause of the fire continue to be under investigation and no report has yet been issued. This and other lawsuits are not based on findings related to an investigation. Therefore, it would be premature for SCE to comment on the origin or cause of the wildfire.”
