Father and teenage son killed in Ventura County plane crash identified

UPDATE

The two victims that died in a single-engine plane crash Sunday afternoon in Ventura County were a father and son from Calabasas. The Ventura County Coroner’s office identified them as 15-year old Dylan Harlan, and 57-year old James Harlan.

Their plane went down in the Santa Rosa Valley near Moorpark around 3:30 Sunday afternoon. The Harlan’s were pronounced dead at the scene.

The plane, described as a single-engine piper aircraft, crashed inside a horse enclosure on private property. No one on the ground was injured and the arena was empty at the time of the crash, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration.

Dylan was a freshman at Calabasas High School, and his father James is the owner of ‘Uncommon Adventures,’ a Calabasas based travel agency. James Harlan also authored a book called ‘Drifting on a Headwind,’ it highlights some of his most exciting adventures from getting lost at sea off the Panamanian coast to surviving a plane crash in Costa Rica. The father and son duo had taken off from Camarillo Airport Sunday. Their destination or if they were on a recreational ride in the area and returning to the Camarillo Airport remains unclear at this time. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office a witnesses described seeing the plane flying just above treetops in the area before it went down in a horse arena.

“We don’t know who was operating the plane. That will be part of the investigation with the FAA and NTSB,” said Captain Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, “We discovered that they actually hit the power lines. There was no power outage, there was no damage to the lines, but there was evidence that they may of fact have hit it.”

This is the second fatal plane crash in Ventura County in less than a week.
