Community hosting events to remember the victims of the Isla Vista tragedy
A candlelight vigil remembering will take place tonight at Anisq’Oyo’ Park in Isla Vista to honor those who were injured or killed in the college town 3 years ago today.
A group called ‘Isla Vista Strong’ is hosting the event at 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. People are asked to join students and community members in remembering the victims and acknowledging the many ways the community has come together in solidarity.
On May 23, 2014, in Isla Vista, a 22-year-old killed six people and injured fourteen others before taking his own life.
Various events have been held and will take place in Isla Vista during the month of May to remember the students. Earlier this month, community members strung up blue LED lights around Isla Vista to symbolize “solidarity through light.” A few days later, students folded 1,000 paper cranes and displayed them in the Student Resource Building to commemorate the victims.
On Monday, a group of graduate students, librarians and a doctoral candidate held a panel for the Isla Vista Memorial Archive project which showed photograps of items left at different memorial sites following the tragic night.
On Tuesday, students were encouraged to wear blue and gold or any Gaucho gear to show unity.
On Wednesday, the UC Santa Barbara Surf Team is hosting the “Fourth Isla Vista Memorial Paddle Out” at Depressions Beach. The paddle out is a way for those in the surf or ocean community to celebrate the victims of May 23, 2014.

– May 8-12, 11am-2pm Daily, Student Resource Building, Room 1104 and Forum -In remembrance of the 2014 Isla Vista tragedy, UCSB Nikkei Student Union is hosting a week-long event to fold 1000 cranes which will be displayed on campus in the Student Resource Building beginning May 22 to commemorate the victims of this tragic event

Documenting Our Community Healing: Responses to the May 23, 2014 Isla Vista Tragedy

Panelists from the May 23, 2014 Isla Vista Memorial Archive project will show photographs from the collection that documents the many ways our community came together through planned and unplanned memorial activities to help each other heal. A catered reception will follow the panel.

The paddle out is a time-honored way for those in the surf/ocean community to celebrate the life of a fallen friend. Organized by the UC Santa Barbara Surf Team, this event will bring the community together for a floating memorial to remember those we lost on May 23, 2014.
