UCSB receives generous donation with safety in mind

The University of California, Santa Barbara received a generous donation from a local philanthropist to help increase security on the campus.

The campus police department obtained 12 new bicycles for its Campus Service Officers, a patrol group made up of students that provides free personal safety escort services throughout the UCSB campus and Isla Vista.

The acquisition brings the total number of bicycles in service by the Campus Service Officers to 25.

The bicycles are one of a number of safety-focused projects being underwritten by Diane Dodds, a graduate of UCSB class of 1968.

“It gives me particular joy to know that this money has been used for bikes to patrol the area that was once my home,” Dodds said in a press release.

Campus Safety Officers patrol year-round, reporting crimes in progress and assisting in emergency situations.

There are 102 male and female students employed as Campus Security Officers.
