ORIGINAL POST

A woman is in the hospital after crashing near the intersection of Highway 1 and California Boulevard. The roadway was temporarily closed for the investigation.

This is also close to the Vandenberg Air Force Base main gate. Santa Barbara County Fire officials said the accident happened just before 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials said they found the 24-year-old woman trapped inside her blue Volkswagen crashed among Eucalyptus trees. She required major extrication and suffered major injuries, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

American Medical Response drove her to the Lompoc Airport where a Cal Star helicopter flew her to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical treatment.

The identity of the driver is unknown at this time, and it is not known if she works at the Air Force base.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
