Highway 33 closed due to mud flows

A large portion of highway 33 is closed due to mudslides.

Friday’s storm brought nearly 10″ of rain to upper Matilija Canyon. All that rain brought down more than a dozen mud and rock flows along highway 33. The closure stretches 50 miles from Wheeler Canyon Gorge Campground to the Santa Barbara County line.

Park’s worker Rick Porter explained what it looked like on the closed portion of the highway Monday morning, “I was dodging rocks that were rolling across the road and rocks that I had to go around and mud washes. I could get through only because of this truck, but it is pretty gnarly up there.”

Cal Trans reports this section of Highway 33 will remain closed for at least a couple more days.
