Elderly cyclist struck by vehicle in Goleta dies

An elderly cyclist who was struck by a vehicle in Goleta Friday has died.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Roman Paredes, 88, of Goleta.

At around 6:30 a.m. Friday, Paredes was struck by a 2005 GMC pickup truck near the intersection of San Mateo Avenue.

Paredes was riding a three-wheel bicycle in the bike lane when the driver of the pickup reportedly took his eyes off the road and drifted into the lane striking Paredes.

Paredes was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. He was removed from life support on Saturday.

The driver was identified as Daniel Gruetzmacher, 33, of Goleta.

Drugs, alcohol and cell phone use are not considered factors in the crash.

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether or not the driver will face criminal charges pending the completion of the investigation.
