Rey Fire Protection In Place At Gibraltar Reservoir
Firefighters are doing what they can to prevent the Rey Fire from getting any closer to the Gibraltar Reservoir.
The dam is about 3 miles away from the east side of the fire.
Fire officials are afraid of contaminating the water source. So pilots in the air have to be careful of where they drop a fire retardant called Phos-Check. Also firefighters are doing what they can on the ground.
Santa Barbara County Fire Department Public Information Officer Mike Eliason said, “some of the dozer lines that the CAL FIRE dozers have been working on, they’re trying to make it wide enough to be one and half times the size of the fuel, to create a natural break to slow the fire’s progression. This is a part of a contingency plan just in case the fire moves into this direction.”
Santa Barbara County Fire sent a strike team to the Gibraltar Reservoir to protect the water source.
They are watching the flames closely and will be ready to battle the Rey Fire if it moves down the hillside.
