Santa Maria animal shelter participates in National Clear the Shelters Day

It’s National Clear the Shelters Day and hundreds of shelters across the United States are taking part to help animals find permanent homes – one of those shelters taking part is in Santa Maria.

It was a pretty successful day with a lot of foot traffic with parents and kids coming through, all trying to find “Forever Homes” for these pets. One lady told News Channel 3 that she thinks she found the love of her life.

“This is Corby.. this is my next love,” Beverly Hoebel said, who was looking to adopt a pet Saturday.

You could definitely feel the love in the air between Beverly Hoebel and her next pet, Corby.

“I lost my spaniel about two months ago.. he had an auto immune deficiency,” Hoebel said.

She says she’s not looking to replace him but rather looking to start a new chapter with a new friend.

Sot: He’s a maltese poodle, he’s a malte-poo,” Hoebel joked.

She’s been visiting with Corby for the past four days. She’ll be able to adopt him in about a week.

“I fell in love with Corby,” Hoebel said.

It’s that type of love that couple Steve Dawson and Amanda Robinson are hoping to find.

“My last dog was a rescue,” Steve Dawson said, who was looking to adopt a pet Saturday.

This is the first year that the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society has participated in the National Clear the Shelters Day.

“Obviously super rewarding to be able to take one of these home and get them out of here.. they appreciate it,” Amanda Robinson said, who was looking to adopt a pet Saturday.

Saturday the no-kill animal shelter was offering adoption fee discounts. They also have a food pantry for people who want to adopt but need financial help to care and feed their new pet.

All the animals are spayed and neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. They aim for about four adoptions a day. They have nearly 60 adoptable cats and dogs.

“We have some great animals here that I think someone would just fall in love with,” Mary Ann Perkins with the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society said.

“I’m hoping to be his next mom,” Hoebel said.

If you didn’t make it out here today, they’re back open at 10 am on Monday.
