Crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Montecito Quickly Turns Fiery on Memorial Day

A vehicle rollover on northbound U.S. Highway 101 just after 11:30 p.m. on Memorial Day quickly turned terrifying as the car became a big fireball.

According to the California Highway Patrol website, the driver was able to self-extricate. The driver’s injuries are unknown.

The car came to rest on its side after the solo vehicle rollover on the right shoulder just south of the San Ysidro Road off ramp.

An initial report stated that nearby brush caught on fire after the car itself became engulfed in flames. Firefighters with the Santa Barbara City Fire Department and the Montecito Fire Protection District were able to quickly douse the flames.

CHP shut down the No. 2 lane for investigation, and to allow crews to clean up the debris on the roadway. Down to one lane, all traffic moved slowly through the area.

No other details were immediately available.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
