Sick Sea Lion Pup Rescued From Ventura Beach
NewsChannel 3 cameras were rolling when a sick sea lion pup was rescued off a Ventura beach.
The sea lion pup estimated to be around ten-months old was spotted by concerned beachgoers early Tuesday afternoon on top of rocks near the Ventura pier.
They called Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute who sent a crew out to check him out.
Chiara Sherman from Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute says, “he is very thin. I have to take a better look at him. He is possible emaciated and he doesn’t look like he is more than 25 pounds so that is just a few pounds from birth weight almost so he is obviously struggling and that is what we are finding a lot of sea lions that are starving and having a hard time staying healthy because once they are this thin they are subject to many parasites and diseases out there and become much weaker and exposed to them.”
CIMWI will now take the little pup to its rescue center to give him the proper care it needs. Once the pup is healthy it will be released back into the wild.
Anyone who sees a sick marine animal can give CIMWI a call at their hotline, 805-567-1505.
