Water Shot 50 Feet Into Air After Truck Shears Hydrant in Santa Maria

Witnesses reported seeing the driver of a pickup truck misjudge a turn and collide with a fire hydrant just after 12 p.m. Thursday on the corner of Betteravia Road and Oakley Avenue.

The impact of the collision caused the pickup to shear off the hydrant and shoot water approximately 50 feet into the air.

Witnesses told police the pickup continued driving down the street after hitting the hydrant.

Santa Maria police say the truck driver was not cited because he pulled over and cooperated with officers.

Santa Maria city workers came out to shut off the water and repaired the hydrant at about 1 p.m.

City crews on scene were not able to estimate how much water was lost.
