Santa Barbara Harbor Could Resume Normal Operations By Monday
A giant dredge is working around the clock at the Santa Barbara Harbor.
A build-up of sand is blocking the harbor’s entrance, impacting whale watching trips and boat rentals.
“We’ve had it happen a couple times before where it’s completely closed and you can’t get in or out. We are close to that right now,” said Eric Engebretson of the Harbor Patrol.
Back to back winter swells made the problem worse and as more waves move in, more sand accumulates.
The Condor Express had to cancel all weekend whale watching tours.
Boats are also staying put at the Santa Barbara Sailing Center.
“We have our Double Dolphin here at the dock. It’s not going out for any whale watching trips. Our private charters and our sailboat rentals are here as well for the weekend,” said employee Arianna Kamp.
The Santa Barbara Sailing Center estimates about $10,000 in lost revenue.
But, owners and employees are understanding about the situation.
“As of now, we are just laying low until Monday and hoping they get it all dredged out,” Kamp said.
Harbor Operations Manager Mick Kronman said the harbor should be fully operational by Sunday afternoon or Monday.
Until then, all boats are advised not to go in or out of the channel.
