Camarillo Football Falls in State Bowl Title Game
Camarillo could not recover from a slow start and their rally fell short in a 16-13 loss to Del Oro in a CIF-State Division II-AA bowl championship game at Sacramento State.
The Scorpions never could amount a running game as they were held to under 40 yards of rushing by the Golden Eagles. Meanwhile Del Oro rode Camrion Davis to the title. He ran for 197 yards and scored both of the team’s touchdowns.
Del Oro drove 68 yards on the opening possession of the game, capped off by a 7-yard TD by Davis. The Golden Eagles added a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter to lead 10-0 at the half.
Camarillo got their high-powered offense going late in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Jake Constantine found Frankie Tostado on a fourth and eight play for an 18-yard touchdown pass, the extra point was missed and Camarillo trailed 10-6.
The Scorpions were poised to take the lead late in the third quarter but Constantine was intercepted in the endzone. Four times in the game Camarillo got to Del Oro’s 22-yard line or closer but failed to score points.
Early in the fourth quarter, Camrion Davis broke some tackles and raced 58-yards for the touchdown. Television replays showed Davis stepping out of bounds but there are no reviews in high school football. The Golden Eagles missed the extra point and Camarillo trailed 16-6.
With under two minutes left, Constantine threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a ball that should have been intercepted, instead found its way into Thomas Janke’s hands for a touchdown and the Scorpions had life, down 16-13 with 1:53 left.
But Del Oro (10-6) recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Constantine passed for 320 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He ends his senior season with 51 TD passes.
Tostado grabbed nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. He had 22 TD receptions in his senior year.
Star running back Isaiah Otis saw limited playing time as he had an injured ankle from last week’s South Regional win against La Habra.
Camarillo ends up 15-1 and they won the CIF-SS Northern Division title along the way.
