Santa Maria Tow Truck Driver Dies in Freak Accident

UPDATE

Smitty’s Towing confirmed in a statement, that one of its tow truck drivers, Sergio Orozco, died from injuries sustained in a freak accident last Friday.

“There was a terrible accident at our Santa Maria facility. We do not yet know exactly what happened. All we know at this time is that we have lost a member of the Smitty’s family,” said Smitty’s. “Our focus now is on supporting the Orozco family.”

Smitty’s Towing promises a full investigation into the incident.

Orozco was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being reportedly crushed between winch cable and the side of his tow truck.

ORIGINAL STORY

A tow tuck driver in Santa Maria was flown to Cottage Hospital Friday afternoon in critical condition after being crushed between winch cable and the side of his tow truck.

Santa Maria fire crews were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Betteravia Road at about 1 p.m.

The Santa Maria Fire Department said the male victim works for the Smitty’s Towing company. KCOY 12 reached out to Smitty’s Towing but they have no comment at this time.

No other information on this incident was immediately known. We will update this story as new information becomes available.
