Police: Intoxicated Pedestrians Cause Vehicle Accident in Santa Maria

Santa Maria police say two intoxicated pedestrians were the cause of a collision that occurred at the intersection of Cook and Thornburg streets at 8:37 p.m. Sunday.

A vehicle driven by 18-year-old Romero Perez Aquino was traveling east bound on Cook Street, but when he got to the Thornburg intersection, two adult men allegedly walked across the road and were struck by Aquino.

One unidentified pedestrian suffered a head injury and was flown to Cottage Hospital. The second pedestrian was identified as 50-year-old Santos Mendoza Gonzales who also suffered a head injury, but was treated at Marian Hospital. His injury was reportedly minor and is expected to recover. The unnamed pedestrian’s medical status has not been released.

Police said that both pedestrians were intoxicated and failed to yield to traffic. Aquino, however, was cited at the scene for driving without a license.
