11-Year-Old Oxnard Student Wins Strawberry Festival Design Competition
At just 11 years old, Diamaya Avila from Curren Elementary School in Oxnard won this year’s California Strawberry Festival Youth Art Design Contest.
Diamaya’s “Berry Funky” design was selected from an all-time record, 2,017 entries. The design features a strawberry hipster sporting sunglasses and a “berry” boom box.
Festival representatives surprised the 11-year-old winner with a pizza party and award presentation in front of her entire 6th grade class. Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin posed with Diamaya for a photo, as Diamaya received a $100 gift certificate.
Those close to Diamaya said she used her creative imagination and positive outlook for the design. “She loves art and is always sketching, so I’m very happy that her artistic abilities were recognized,” said her teacher.
Diamaya’s winning design will be showcased for thousands of festival attendees to see at the 32nd Annual California Strawberry Festival on May 16 and 17.
