Cachuma Lake Recreation, Camping, Fishing Derby Still On Even During Drought Conditions

Cachuma Lake is going down, but hopes of catching a big fish are coming to the surface, and this weekends fish derby is spawning renewed interest.

This week, 6000 pounds of trout are being “planted” into the lake.

The derby this weekend has prizes in excess of $5000.

It benefits the Neal Taylor nature Center. Over 15,000 school children visit annually along with visitors to the lake. The center has various displays on birds, animals and fish found at Cachuma.

Executive Director Julie McDonald says despite images showing the lake level dropping, “right now there’s a vibrant population of bass, catfish, and sunfish in the lake.”

More fish are on the way.

“The big annual fish derby is this weekend and the trout plants are timed perfectly,” said McDonald. “And there is great camping and wonderful experiences with the nature cruise run by the county naturalist, there are nature walks, we have a junior ranger program.”

She also says many men, women and children coming to the lake have a perception the chances of catching more fish with the lower level is greater. McDonald is not sure how true that is, but she does say with the drought dry back country, more wild life are coming down to the water’s edge for a drink.

Campsites in recent years, have become more attractive with the addition of yurts, and cabins.
