Toll From Weekend Burglary Spree Rises

Two teenagers were booked into Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall after police said they went on a burglary spree in Santa Barbara early Saturday morning.

Initial reports claimed the spree involved only 11 businesses. But, police have updated the information bringing the total number of businesses affected to 15.

Sabrina Full Service Salon & Boutique and Ashtanga Yoga were added to the list of break-ins. Police also say one vehicle was vandalized outside of Ayers Repairs.

Police believe the break-ins started on the Westside at La Bella Rosa Bakery on San Andres.

Owners Richard and Rosa Guajardo said their surveillance cameras captured the suspects throwing a brick through the window just after midnight.

“They seemed so relaxed. They were just looking around at first. Then, they started trying to get into the cash registers. Not in a hurry at all. They felt right at home,” Richard Guajardo said.

The couple reported the thieves took thousands of dollars from the registers.

Police say it appeared the teens then moved toward downtown, hitting several other businesses including a Mobil Gas station, Paradise Tobacco, Fuzion Gallery & Boutique, Super Cucas Restaurant, Dahlia’s Beauty Salon, The Game Stop, Instant Klasick, and The Santa Barbara Public Market.

Surveillance cameras were also rolling at South Coast Deli on Carrillo Street when the suspects shattered the glass door.

“We had two cameras. It’s pretty clear. You see the glass break you seem them come in smash the drawers. They were using a towel they weren’t wearing gloves. It’s not funny but they were not the brightest tools in the shed.” owner Jim St. John said.

The arrested teens were 16 and 17 and believed to be from Santa Babrara. They were arrrested around 4 a.m. Saturday near the Paseo Nuevo Mall.

Police estimate the suspects caused about $20,000 dollars in property damage and $13,000 in losses. About $8,000 dollars was recovered.

Investigators continue to search for a third teen believed to be involved in the crime and are asking him to turn himself in.
