Santa Barbara Rock Gym Inspired by El Capitan Climb

People around the world and here in Santa Barbara were inspired by those climbers who made history becoming the first to free climb Yosemite’s El Capitan.

On Wednesday climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgesen finished their 18 day 3,000-foot climb in Yosemite National Park.

The two climbers became the first to scale the Dawn Wall of El Capitan without tools to help them up and local climbers in Santa Barbara are inspired to do the same.

“It would be amazing for any of us to just be able to climb up there with some rope but the fact that they are doing it fee climb in proper style is so impressive,” said Chris Hamman, the program director at Santa Barbara Rock Gym.
