Rincon Classic Timeline Opens, but Official Contest Weekend Not Set Just Yet

The 2015 Channel Islands Surfboards Rincon Classic is expected to take place this month, but the exact date has yet to be released. It will all depend on the surfing conditions coming our way.

Organizer Chris Keets said the waves this weekend will be attractive but not the best based on what he is seeing on the weather maps for the weeks ahead.

“There will be swell on Friday and Saturday but it is moderate and it is dropping Sunday and you are looking for something that is building and climaxes on Sunday of the event and has fireworks as opposed to sparklers,” said Keet.

They take it one week at a time, in January, and on Wednesday they can declare the event for the upcoming weekend. That will set a wave of coordination, sponsors, surfers and staff in motion – all heading to the Rincon coastline where Ventura County meets Santa Barbara County.

The next call in the waiting period will be January 14.

The surfing event began in 1979. It features several divisions of surfers including under 12 and over 55 years old.

After the contest there is an awards ceremony at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
