Santa Barbara Police Catch Attempted Rape Suspect

A Santa Barbara man is in jail on several felonies, including attempted rape, after allegedly assaulting a woman inside a beach area motel. Police say the attack occurred Saturday morning.

While the first arriving officers were interviewing the victim at the Ala Mar Motel on Cabrillo Boulevard, another officer was able to locate the suspect nearby on Bath St. and put him into handcuffs.

The man has been identified as Felipe Martinez Gallegos, 31 of Santa Barbara.

Police say he is being charged with several felony offenses including burglary, attempted rape and dissuading a witness.

Investigators believe Gallegos entered the room with a key from a previous stay.

The victim lives out of the country. She was able to give officers a description of the suspect and make a positive identification after the arrest.

Gallegos remains in jail with bail set at $1 million.
