Cal Poly Hoops Win at San Francisco

David Nwaba scored 19 and hit a key jumper with 1:21 left, helping Cal Poly hold off San Francisco for a 78-71 win on Monday night.

Cal Poly (4-4) led from midway through the first half until San Francisco (5-5) pulled in front at 70-69 on Matt Glover’s free throws with 2:06 left. Joel Awich’s pair of free throws gave the lead back to the Mustangs, and Nwaba and Brian Bennett hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 75-70.

Bennett finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Reese Morgan added 17 points for Cal Poly, which led by as many as 14 in the second half.

The Dons scored back-to-back on Kruize Pinkins’s three-point play and Mark Tollefsen’s 3-pointer to pull even at 68 with 2:31 to go. Tollefsen led the Dons with 16 points; Pinkins scored 14, Tim Derksen 13 and Chris Adams 12.

The victory was Cal Poly’s first non-conference road win since stunning UCLA on November 26, 2012.

Cal Poly plays Northeastern on Wednesday, December 17 to open Santa Clara’s 48th annual Cable Car Classic.
