Bike For Tykes Surprises First-Graders

Boys and girls thought they were at an early holiday party when they were given new bicycles after school at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Barbara on Wednesday.

Madilyn Hays said the students attending Paul Mitchell School in Santa Barbara raised enough money to buy 30 bikes by holding bake sales and taking part in flash mob fundraising events.

Treasure Chest Thrift and Bike shop on Main Street in Ventura put the bikes with training wheels together.

The principal at Franklin Elementary School chose the 30 first-graders who received bikes.

Patty Coronado was brought to tears talking about what it meant to see her daughter Jayni receive a bike. Jayni was also celebrating her seventh birthday.

Paul Mitchell instructors said, “giving back is the new black.” They also shared the hashtag #givingbackisourstyle.

The school gave parents shampoo samples and gift certificates for free haircuts at the school’s salon.

Organizers plan to make ‘Bikes For Tikes’-an annual event.
