Family and Friends Mark One-Year Anniversary Of Local Woman Killed In DUI Crash

On Saturday, family and friends of Mallory Dies gathered at the scene of the DUI crash that claimed her life.

Dec. 6 is the one-year anniversary of the tragedy that rocked the community.

Dies was struck and killed by Raymond Morua, a former congressional aide to Lois Capps, as she was crossing the street in downtown Santa Barbara.

“A lot of times when something tragic like this happens, people are supportive for a few weeks. The community is amazing. The love we’ve received all year long, it lifts my heart a lot,” said Dies’ father Matt.

Dies’ family and friends are focused on preventing future tragedies.

They continue to work on and promote the Vow 4 Mal foundation to make sure that if people have been drinking, they don’t drive.

People gathered at the memorial lit candles, carried yellow flowers and wore T-shirts emblazoned with the Vow 4 Mal foundation logo.

“You are showing love and saving lives. You’re making me proud. You’re making Mallory proud. We’ve made a lot of progress, but we’ve still got a long, long way to go,” Matt Dies said.

Dies quit his job after his daughter died and has dedicated his life to spreading the word about the foundation.

“We’ve recently partnered up with Caribbean Coffee, which is expanding rapidly. They want to take our Designated Hero Program everywhere they go. That means our word is getting out,” Dies said.
