UC Expands Legal Services For Immigrant Students

The University of California is planning to offer legal services at six campuses to immigrant students who are facing deportation or have parents who might be eligible for relief under President Barack Obama’s new immigration order.

UC President Janet Napolitano announced Friday that the university has established an Undocumented Student Legal Services Center to provide legal advice on immigration at the system’s campuses without law schools.

Napolitano says she hopes colleges and universities in other states replicate the pilot program, which will be run by faculty from the law school at UC Davis.

University spokeswoman Brooke Converse says the project has been in the works for several months and that Napolitano’s office is providing $577,860 to fund it.

The targeted campuses are located in Merced, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Riverside.
