Santa Maria Police are investigating a major traffic accident that left two people hurt.

The two cars collided at the intersection of Betteravia and Miller shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

25-year-old Shane Clayton from Atascadero was airlifted to Cottage Hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, Blanche Leaf, 74 years old from Lompoc, was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Santa Maria firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue Clayton.

Police say Leaf was driving a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder traveling south on Miller Street while a 2009 Toyota Prius, driven by Clayton, was going east on Betteravia Road when they collided.

Byron Salazar of Santa Maria said he witnessed the accident and tells the Newsroom the impact was so severe, the two cars went flying in opposite directions with one crashing into a low circular stone sign in front of the Santa Barbara County Betteravia Government Center.

The accident is under investigation.
