Veterans in Need Get Help With Free Mattresses

You can rest assure, a program to help veterans with free mattresses is going over well for those in need.

About 50 arrived this week in Santa Barbara. All have been donated.

It’s part of a program sponsored by PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) based in Los Angeles. Overall 300 mattresses, box springs and frames are being distributed in the Greater Los Angeles area. They are coming from Sit ‘n Sleep stores and the Tempur-Pedic mattress company.

Larry Miller, CEO of the Sit ‘n Sleep stores, was on hand Thursday, to present one of the first mattresses in Santa Barbara when it was delivered through the PATH program from a Sit ‘n Sleep truck.

He said veterans have physical and mental needs that the new mattress will help solve.

Katie Hill with PATH says the group locates affordable apartments for veterans in need, but to furnish them, it takes donations. “It’s incredible costly for us to truly furnish and apartment, and we rely heavily on donations. Mattresses are such an expensive part of it, and this is really amazing that we are able to so this.”

The local veteran Ken Keener was grateful. “Having a place to sleep and wake up refreshed is going to be a great feeling. Can’t beat it. A good night sleep, we all need that,” he said with a smile as the mattress was heading up to his room.
