Three People Lose Housing in Chapala St. Fire

Smoke poured from an older home on Chapala St. in Santa Barbara Thursday night when a bedroom fire broke out about 8:30 p.m. No one was hurt but damage was significant.

Santa Barbara City Fire responded with several engines. The first firefighters quickly attacked with several hoses.

The fire did not spread to other homes.

Fire investigators say the cause is accidental.

Three people were left without a place to stay last night and the American Red Cross has helped them with their housing and recovery.

Smoke from the fire could be seen a few blocks away on State St.

Chapala between Mission St. and Padre St. was closed off by Santa Babara Police.

An AMR ambulance was on scene in case of an emergency medical need.

Many residents were outside of their homes in the upper downtown neighborhood – drawn there by the loud sound of sirens coming in from different directions.

The streets are open today.
